Your first love

We are not talking about the first person you fell in love with - not a celebrity crush or your first date.

The first love that Pat Hughes spoke about on Sept. 9, 2018 refers to who or even what takes the "first position", or the highest position, of our lives? Who is your first love?

Is God your first love?

Pat preached from Revelation 2, where Jesus gave a revelation to the Church of Ephesus. The church had drifted from being the passionate and Christ-centred church they were once commended for by Paul in his letter to them (The Epistle of Ephesians).

The Church of Ephesus was hard working, but they lost the focus of keeping God in the centre of their toils, of their lives, of their hearts.

Revelation 2:2-4 says:

I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

The same happens in our lives, too. We had a passionate love for God, especially after first becoming a Christian. But, over time, we become distracted by our jobs, our schooling, or friends and family, and the everyday challenges we experience. Perhaps we are working hard for our church or our Bible study group, but maybe we are working too hard and are losing focus of the reason we organise a church or a study group: to share the love of God.

In the video below, Pat examines the command Jesus gave to the Church of Ephesus and how they - and, therefore, we - can make God their first love again:

We look forward to seeing you on Sundays at 17:00 at the First Baptist Church on Kłodnicka 2 in Wrocław!
